Flow cytometry is one of the most important key technologies for the analysis of heterogeneous cell mixtures like blood or isolated tissue cells. It enables the characterization of cells using multiple parameters at the single-cell level, allowing a detailed analysis of complex cellular relationships. At the same time, cells can be separated for further molecular biological or functional analysis by means of cell sorting.
Mass cytometry allows for even more parameters (>40) to be analyzed simultaneously by using isotope-tags instead of fluorochrome-tags. It is now also available as imaging mass cytometry for tissue sections.
